Words of a Board Member
TIME FOR ACTIONS It is rather pleasant to review publicity like mass media coverage and positive comments related to the Chambers 50th anniversary celebration some weeks ago .The sustainability/ environmental seminar had a good mixture of speakers, who confirmed their strategy that sustainability/ environmental issues, has high priority in all kind of institutions and corporates nowadays, which is encouraging. The environmental award handed out to Holmen, was very motivated considering the company’s environmental and sustainability strategy and the actions already taken, during a number of years. . The gala dinner with its record participants of a Chamber event ever held, had also a rather nice mix of e g top executives like Michael Treschow and Jeroen van der Veer, entrepreneurs like Ingvar Kamprad, high tech persons like Swedish astronaut Christer Fuglesang, old Chamber board members and of course all present members who enables the Chamber to be active. In addition the royal guests showed that they appreciate the close business link between the countries. It is rather interesting to study the big impact Dutch trading companies and entrepreneurs have had on the industry in Sweden during some centuries, and also recognize so much business between the countries, that is ongoing for time being.. Ingvar Kamprad, who received the Chambers Life time Achievement Award, was very pleased when he found out that his normal tactic to buy low priced food in markets in cities by coming 30 minutes before they close, was not that uncommon in the Netherlands, when he talked to some Dutch people. He feels pleased in relation to trips to the Netherlands, not only for meeting cost conscious people, but also meeting skilled business men and trading people. Considering the economical climate today, I think there will not come any new recession in the next 5 to 8 years, but the recovery will still take long time and we can not expect to be back to a pre-crisis economical situation soon. New structures and ways of thinking are needed, in order to get the growth in the economy. For the Chamber, it is important to utilize the publicity and attention created during the latest weeks in relation to the 50th anniversary celebration and try to attract new members and to offer contacts, networking and support to its members. Let us try to make actions and efforts in the next months to increase the number of Chamber members! Christmas is getting close and the traditional Chamber event of celebrating Lucia is only a month ahead. This year the traditional Lucia will be celebrated at the very nice and classical Amstel hotel. We look forward seeing you there on December 10th. Finally, thanks a lot to Kerstin and her team, anniversary committee, patrons and all other who has been involved in the recent events, which have put so much time and passion into realizing important and nice events. I look very much forward to a lot of activities and events in 2011, so let us go full steam ahead.

A Master Class Lesson from Småland
Småland is a so-called landskap (historical province) in southern Sweden, with the size of three quarters of the Netherlands, but with only 720,000 inhabitants. For a large part covered by forests and with little arable land, the economic conditions were always harsh throughout history. Consequently Smålanders learned already at an early stage to be entrepreneurial. Not surprisingly, many succesful Swedish companies have their roots in Småland, the most well known being of course IKEA Group of Companies (‘IKEA’ below), which is still run out of Älmhult.
On September 28, 2010 the Swedish Chamber of Commerce in the Netherlands proudly held its Master Class Luncheon with the CEO of IKEA, Mikael Ohlsson, as key-note speaker and honorary guest. This report is based on the presentation by Mr Ohlsson, the discussion with the audience and a separate brief interview by Hans Duijn.
